Custom wood slat walls · Winnipeg, Manitoba

Parametric slat walls, drawn to your wall and cut in Winnipeg.

Each wood slat wall is a run of laser-cut fins whose depths follow a wave, sized to the inch of your wall and finished by hand in birch plywood or MDF.

The making

How a slat wall is made

Every wall goes through the same four stages in the shop, in this order, one order at a time. The fins start as a parametric file and end up on your studs.

  1. Stage 1: Cut

The fin profiles are nested on a 4 × 8 ft sheet and cut on the CO2 laser in a single pass. Contours, profiles and fine detail come off the laser. Straight stock is cut on the saw.

  2. Stage 2: Finish

The kerf edges are cleaned up and every fin is sanded. Then it takes a matte oil, or primer and paint.

  3. Stage 3: Assemble

Each fin is numbered and mounted one at a time on a backing panel. The panel is screwed into the studs, so the wave lines up across the whole wall.

  4. Stage 4: Install

Once the wall is up, light catches each fin at a different depth, so the shape shifts through the day.

Patterns

What a wave wall can carry

The depth of every fin is a number in the file, so one feature wall can carry a wave, a ripple, peaks, or a whole picture. These four are drawn with the same model as the wall at the top of the page.

  • Wave

One long crest that rolls from one end of the wall to the other.

  • Ripple

Rings that spread out across the fins from a single point.

  • Peaks

Raised points that climb out of the wall and fall back into it.

  • Picture

Carried by fin depth. From the front the image appears. From the side it reads as a slat wall.

Colour ideas are welcome. An MDF wall can be painted any colour, and a birch plywood wall can be oiled or stained.

Materials

MDF or birch plywood

Both are cut from 0.5 in stock and both stand up to 6.5 in off the wall. The choice comes down to what you want people to notice first.

Drawn sample: an MDF fin, primed and painted deep green.

MDF Budget-friendly

Paint grade. Primed and painted any colour you like, with a solid, even tone from edge to face. Choose it when the shape should do the talking rather than the grain.

Commission

How a commission works

Four steps from a tape measure on your wall to fins on your studs. You deal with the same person at every one.

  1. Consult

We measure the wall and talk through material, depth and budget.

  2. Design

I build a parametric file to your wall's exact dimensions, so every fin is drawn for its place on that wall.

  3. Fabricate

Contours are cut on the laser and straight stock on the saw. Every fin is sanded and finished by hand.

  4. Install

Delivered and mounted in Winnipeg, or shipped anywhere with install notes.

The shop

One maker, one laser, in Winnipeg

TimberWave is a one-person shop in Winnipeg, Manitoba. I design, cut and finish every wall by hand, one order at a time.

Each custom wall is drawn to the exact dimensions of the wall it's going on, never a stock size. The laser handles the contours, profiles and fine detail. The saw handles the straight stock.

FAQ

Before you write

Should I choose MDF or birch plywood?

MDF is the budget-friendly, paint-grade option, primed and painted any colour for a solid, even tone. Choose it when the shape should do the talking. Birch plywood is the premium option, with natural grain under oil, or stain and a clear coat. Choose it when the wood itself should be the star.

How deep can the fins be?

Fins are cut from 0.5 in stock and can stand up to 6.5 in off the wall.

Do you make slat walls in standard sizes?

No. Every wall is drawn to your exact wall dimensions, so there is no stock size to choose from.

I live outside Winnipeg. Can I still order a wall?

Yes. In Winnipeg the wall is delivered and mounted. Anywhere else it ships with install notes.

Can a slat wall carry a picture?

Yes. The picture is carried by fin depth. Seen from the front the image appears, and from the side it reads as a slat wall.

What should I send for a quote?

Your wall size, a material choice (or "not sure"), the look you're after, a straight-on photo, and where the wall is going. The full list is just below.

  • Wall width and height. Feet and inches are fine. Note any outlets, switches and trim.
  • Material. MDF, birch plywood, or not sure yet.
  • The look you're after. A pattern, an image, a subtle ripple, colour ideas.
  • A straight-on photo of the wall. Stand back and shoot it square.
  • Where it's going. A Winnipeg install, or shipped with install notes.
